The cake fairy

Reentry from honeymoon to real life was softened a bit by this…
…which was waiting for us when we got home this morning. Looks like the cake fairy got in while we were away! And the milk fairy had restocked the fridge so we could start making up for missed tea without any shopping delays!
It’s been a fantastic September so far, but it’s not over yet. The rest of the month I will mostly be:
- Married!
- Unpacking
- Going back to work tomorrow- urg!
- Catching up (what’s been happing the last few weeks? Anything interesting?)
- Writing lots of thank you letters
- Looking at wedding photos
- Looking at honeymoon photos
- Finding out why @jthouse is frozen
- Working on my second CurrentCost development board circuit (this time sensing pipe temperature- any clues?!) inspired by the homecamp blog
- Taking things apart
- Going to another wedding!
- Other stuff I’ll find out about when I risk looking at my inbox in the morning
But first, of course, I’ll be eating cake! (And sleeping!)
More tea?

We spent a very nice long weekend loafing around drinking tea, mostly at home to avoid any lovely bank holiday traffic. We did end up getting out to two local tearooms over the weekend as well; once before getting lost in the Meon Valley and the second time to catch up with friends from the other side of Hedge End.
Lilly’s Tea And Coffee House, Wickham
This was the first time we’ve been here since it became Lilly’s Tea and Coffee House, and it’s much better than before the make over. It seems quite spacious inside and there was a very tempting selection of cakes, but we both went for a cream tea. My only complaint with the food was the jam, cream, scone ratio: tiny jar-plenty-1! There just wasn’t enough scone to hold all the cream! Nice scone though, and larger than average, but just the one.
There were also a surprising number of staff, most of them looking slightly frazzled though. Despite being a good half an hour before closing time, we had the nagging feeling of not being made particularly welcome. They were all very efficient but Jo thinks they may not have heard of service with a smile.
The Anvil Tearooms, Bishops Waltham
Second time at the Anvil and I was very much looking forward to another slice of Tunisian orange cake. There was a scary moment when it looked like someone was buying the last piece!!! Luckily there was another whole cake ready to go, and it was every bit as good as I remembered. Jo had another cream tea, just for the purpose of comparison of course. Much better jam, cream, scone ratio, with the ideal two scones and bowls of jam and cream. There was also butter here, which is nice.
As before, the service is more unique than the average tearoom, which I like. And the singing chef is still singing.
If you want a more modern cream tea, I’d recommend Lilly’s tearoom, but my favourite is still the Anvil.
Mmmm, cake

Thanks to Richard’s departure from computer related blogging, this chocolate cake emerged from the microwave after just 5 minutes!
It very nearly jumped out of the mug and escaped the microwave on its own while it was cooking. Might try a bigger mug next time; yes, there will most definitely be a next time!! (On the subject of mugs, Ian does get bonus points for his inspired choice!)
Tea o’clock

I’m quite partial to a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake, but finding a good tearoom while out and about is a bit hit and miss. For full-fat dining, Jo often checks the ladies who lunch reviews before booking a meal. Unfortunately when it comes to tearooms, there doesn’t seem to be anything similar; I can find a tearoom in Boston, but there’s slightly less to go on in Hampshire!
Fortunately we’ve been really lucky with a couple of our recent tearoom selections:
The Anvil Tearooms, Bishops Waltham
The tea and cake was excellent in this slightly random tearoom/wine merchant combo. We took my mum here for some lunch recently, so I also had my other favourite food at the same time: pie! There’s entertainment as well as food on offer with a fire alarm (not exactly a rush for the door- luckily it wasn’t my food!) and a singing chef, so be prepared!
My mouth’s watering just thinking about the Mexican chilli pie and the Tunisian orange cake. Definitely recommend a visit- check their website for directions.
Folly Tree Tea Rooms, Petersfield
We probably wouldn’t have found the Folly Tree without the internet so I’m glad Jo planned ahead. I had a starter before getting to the cake- it’s been a while since I had a proper bacon sarnie, mmmm, bacon cooked to perfection, thick white bread with the butter soaking in. Unusually the milk jug poured without a drip escaping the cups and my cake was very nice as well, so I was happy. Jo’s sister (who was paying- thank you Kate!) was not so lucky in the cake department, with a bit of a tearoom shocker… they were out of fruit scones!!!
Jo’s all keen to start a dedicated tearoom review site so I’d better get thinking of a proper rating scale… teaspoons maybe? Any suggestions for good places for tea and cake to try out?

Almost by coincidence (i.e. only slightly contrived after I noticed how close it was) this is the first anniversary of Notes from a small field and the 100th post! If you don’t like blog posts about blog stats, look away now!
- First post: Hello world! on 19 September 2007, and I didn’t even write it!
- Most popular post (hits): Cheap low power home server options with 1,026 hits
- Most popular post (comments): DSL, Puppy Linux, Netvoyager and CurrentCost with 12 comments
- Least popular post (not including this one!): Perranporth, Cornwall with 3 hits, which is a shame because the Ordnance Survey still do nice wallpaper pics
- Most popular search term: “low power home server” 112 times
- Busiest day: Thursday, July 31, 2008 with 306 hits
- Total views: 8,994
- Spam: 2,763 (all caught thanks to Akismet)
Luckily it’s not all numbers. Here’s my roundup from the past year/99 posts:
- Favourite post (other than the obvious one!): You can do anything with stop motion animation
- Favourite comment: if I’d have started this blog sooner, there would have been a lot of posts about fitting the kitchen!
- Favourite incoming link: Blogrolled
- Most useful post: Setting up an MDM Server development environment (useful but not necessarily interesting! I’ve pointed a lot of people at work to it and it seems to help)
- Most useless post: iPhone accessibility (nobody seems interested, which is a shame- must try and catch up with Andy about trying it out on the touch screen kiosk in the ETS lab instead)
If you got this far, well done! If all goes to plan, I’ll have some cakes at my desk in Hursley to celebrate.
P.S. Aarrr!
Update: If you were working at home today/don’t work in Hursley, you missed out… yum…
Money trees
September 10, 2008 at 22:17 | In Life, the Universe, and Everything | Leave a CommentTags: cake, friendship, german, jade, linden, money, plants, trees
Can I interest anyone in a money tree? Yes, an actual money tree, not the virtual variety!
Before you get too excited, money doesn’t actually grow on this type of tree, and I must admit I haven’t even seen it flower. I got it from my mum, plus it has survived longer than any other plant I’ve had, mostly due to it’s incredible ability to go without water, so I guess it saves money but that’s as good as it gets.
The money tree is doubly hard to kill because everytime you pull a bit off, you end up with another one, a bit like the hell-hound Sammael in Hellboy… well, kind of. Anyway, the last two bits I pulled off have sprouted roots so they’ll be looking for a new home soon:
For anyone with previous money tree clones, here’s how the big one’s doing!
So getting just a bit top heavy. Might start taking bigger lumps off soon before it falls off the windowsill!
(All of which reminds me of German friendship cakes; haven’t had one of those round for years.)
Strictly pancake cooking- live!
February 5, 2008 at 19:00 | In Life, the Universe, and Everything | 4 CommentsTags: cake, cooking, food, live, pancakes, twitter
This may turn out to be a complete disaster but I’m going to attempt live twittering as I make pancakes in a Gordon Ramsey style cookalong live!
I’ll update this post with the results later but to follow events in real time, follow me on twitter!
Updated: still very full of pancake! Here’s how it went…
- Digging out ingredients (mug of flour, egg or two, pint of milk and pinch of salt) and a giant bowl
- Stirring. Flour and salt already in the bowl, plus eggs in the middle and gradually adding milk to get a paste. It’s the next bit I mess up!
- Still stirring. Adding milk a little at a time… until it’s too runny to cook properly- obviously that’s not the aim, but this is batch 1!!
- Ok, as suspected, batch 2 required! Little more flour I think. Leaving first batch to stand. Not long until the fun bit!
- Breaking out the frying pan! The batter should apparently be a creamy texture- being cautious and going for extra thick cream for now!
- Can’t type- eating!
- Jo’s been beaten by pancakes. I’m still going, just! Tried frying them with butter this year- tasty.
- Might just manage one more… or two. Sprinkling on the sugar with a squirt of lemon. Jo prefers jam and sugar- I keep saying jam IS sugar!
- I couldn’t eat another thing! That’s it for strictly pancake cooking live- I’m off for a kip on the sofa!
Hope to have some photos of the event up at some point too- Jo got a good action shot!
